Chapter 8
O’FLAGGAN STOOD in his interrogation room. He was relishing his upcoming encounter with the fairy. He’d never had anyone survive his attention this long without medical aid, but he had to admit it’d felt extremely invigorating to remove his wings. Kind of like ripping the wings off a butterfly and watching it crawl upon the ground as it died. The lash had just seemed to weaken the creature, and although it was enjoyable watching the glass-encrusted leather peel back his skin, he was tiring of these games. Cardinal Swift would be demanding answers, and so far the blasted fairy hadn’t given him anything other than a few satisfying screams.
He needed to remain on task and get the info he needed. He’d been indulging his bloodthirsty side instead of focusing on finding the Elementals. His enjoyment of dismembering the fairy had to take second place to getting more information from him before he killed the beast.
He looked up as two of his guards returned without the fairy.
“He’s not in the cell, your Grace.”
“What do you mean, he’s not in the cell? Did he escape?” O’Flaggan snarled.
“No, sir. I don’t think so, sir. Sammy said he turned to dust.” The guard stared at the ground at his feet. All of his guards had learned early on that making eye contact with the archbishop was a deadly prospect. He didn’t suffer insubordination, fools, or challenges to his authority lightly.
“Sammy? Sammy’s here?” O’Flaggan frowned and folded his hands. “When did he arrive?”
“I don’t know, your Grace. He was just sitting in the cell where the fairy had been locked up, beside a pile of dust.” The guard shrugged and looked to his partner for backup.
“What do you mean, when did he arrive? Isn’t he always here?” the other man asked, looking back at the first.
“Bring him to me.” O’Flaggan flung out an arm toward the door.
The men practically ran from him, back into the dungeon. He needed to find better guards. These guys were idiots. Sammy had disappeared with the rest of the prisoners in the warehouse weeks ago. The fact that he’d shown up was fortunate, since that pervert Mason wanted him. It meant he wouldn’t lose one of his priests to the man’s appetites. He just needed to find out where the boy had been first. Since the fairy was gone, Sammy would make a nice substitute for his pent-up aggression and would give up the information he needed much more easily.
O’Flaggan paced about his room, perusing his toys with anticipation. Even though he’d begun to tire of Sammy, there was something to be said about a subject whose responsiveness he could predict.
The guards brought Sammy into the room and shoved him at the archbishop.
He approached his little whipping boy, looking him over carefully. Eying his new but slightly dirty clothing speculatively. “Where have you been?”
“I got lost.” Sammy stared at the floor. “There was an attack at the warehouse. Strange people were all over the place. I hid there until I could heal enough to go home.
